When trying to decide which type of tree to choose for your privacy screen, there are many important considerations. One of the biggest factors in your decision will be the trees’ maximum size. You want trees that will grow tall enough that they’ll give your yard a secluded feel, but not so tall that they’ll grow into power lines or block a nice view from an upstairs window. Other important considerations include soil type (acidic vs. alkaline), watering requirements, and sunlight needs. By planning smartly, there’s a much better chance that, years down the road, you’ll have a privacy screen that is healthy and isn’t overgrown. But if your trees do become overgrown, you can call up our local arborists for expert tree trimming in the greater Sacramento area. Here’s a look at three popular trees for creating privacy screens.
Emerald Green Arborvitae
Emerald green arborvitaes are enduringly popular for creating privacy screens. This is because they grow to about 15 feet tall, which is a desirable height for such a project. Also, once they’re established, they don’t require much water, which helps to cut down on your house bills. Ideally, your emerald green arborvitaes will get at least six hours of direct sun per day.
Leyland Cypress
If you’re in a situation where you seek a much taller privacy screen, then you could go with Leyland cypresses, which can grow to more than 70 feet high. These trees offer an attractive Mediterranean look and can be pruned hard when necessary. You’ll want to keep in mind, however, that Leyland cypresses often only live for around 25 years. For growing conditions, they prefer rich, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.
Spartan Juniper
Spartan junipers are similar to emerald green arborvitaes in that they grow to around 15 feet in height and will often naturally grow to a uniform shape. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil. And it’s important to be mindful of the fact that they’re not very compatible with pruning.
