With fall’s arrival and winter’s approach, it’s important to take some basic measures to help keep your trees healthy and attractive. While you may be able to complete some of these tasks yourself, others—such as removing large dead limbs—are best left to a professional. At BP Tree Services, our local arborists are experts at tree care in the greater Sacramento area. We’d be more than happy to provide you with a quote for seasonal tree maintenance.
Quick Tips for Fall Tree Care
One important task is to remove any limbs that are dead, diseased, or dying. These limbs create a serious safety hazard because they’re liable to come crashing down during a winter storm. By safely removing these limbs before a storm arrives, this risk is eliminated.
It’s also a good idea to remove all leaves that have fallen around the tree’s base. This is because fallen leaves are liable to harbor harmful fungi. In the springtime, as temperatures start to heat back up, the fungal spores may then spread to the tree and cause disease.
You could also benefit from applying an anti-dessicant to your trees because the winter months bring dry air and more wind, which can cause trees to lose moisture out of their pores. Anti-desiccants are waxy substances that coat the surfaces to prevent loss of moisture. A sign of desiccation is that needles are browning.
Another worthwhile task is to fertilize trees in early November before the chilliest weather hits. This can improve the roots’ strength, making it more likely that the tree will be able to survive any extreme weather that the winter brings.
Also, it’s wise to mulch around your trees. Around the tree’s base, you can add about three inches of organic mulch at a three-foot radius. It’s important that the mulch is only above the roots and not built up along the trunk. Mulching will help with moisture and nutrient retention, while also providing protection from the cold.
