When big trees become diseased, they can soon become major safety hazards. This is because their increasingly poor health makes them more prone to toppling over in high winds, which could result in property damage and injuries. If you have a tree on your property that appears to be dead/dying/diseased, then you should have an experienced arborist come out to inspect it. At BP Tree Services, our local arborists are highly experienced with identifying diseased trees. Then, if necessary, we can safely cut them down. Here’s a look at five common tree diseases.
Powdery Mildew
Many types of trees can be affected by powdery mildew, which causes fungal threads to grow on leaves. Then the leaves dry up, turn brown, and fall off. Fortunately, trees are usually able to survive bouts of powdery mildew.
Oak Wilt
Oak wilt is a fungal disease that prevents proper water/nutrient circulation, often causing oak trees to die within a year. A symptom of oak wilt is leaf veins that turn yellow before turning brown. Then, the tree will start to become defoliated.
Anthracnose
Another fungal disease, anthracnose afflicts a variety of trees and shrubs. It’s particularly known for affecting dogwoods. Anthracnose symptoms can vary between plant species, but discoloration and defoliation are issues that can occur.
Sooty Mold
Sooty mold often affects fruit trees in Northern California. One of the biggest drawbacks of this disease is that it commonly brings along aphids. This disease typically doesn’t kill trees, but causes black splotches and yellowing of leaves. When fruit trees are afflicted with sooty mold, the fruit can usually still be eaten after being washed with mild soap and warm water.
Apple Scab
Apple scab commonly affects crabapple trees, causing leaf lesions and, ultimately, leaf loss. While apple scab doesn’t typically kill the tree, it can cause a severe reduction in aesthetic appeal, which is especially problematic with flowering crabapples that are grown for their attractiveness. You can help to prevent this issue by using fungicides when buds are breaking.
